Monitoring and Evaluation of Water Quality Monitoring

Last updated: 19/12/2025

Objective

The objective of this course is to strengthen participants’ understanding of how to evaluate, sustain, and improve water quality monitoring programmes over time. The module focuses on monitoring and evaluation (M&E), long-term monitoring strategies, and the financial and institutional considerations required to ensure that water quality monitoring remains effective, adaptive, and credible in the long run.

What you will learn

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose and key components of monitoring and evaluation (M&E) in water quality monitoring programmes.

  • Identify and apply appropriate indicators to assess the performance, relevance, and effectiveness of monitoring activities.

  • Recognise how risk-based and adaptive approaches support long-term water quality monitoring and responsive decision-making.

  • Understand the institutional, governance, and knowledge-management factors that influence the sustainability of monitoring programmes.

  • Identify key cost elements and resource requirements involved in water quality monitoring, including sampling, equipment, data management, and long-term financing.

About this course

This course provides a foundation in the design of the monitoring and evaluation stage of a water quality monitoring programme and considerations of setting a long-term monitoring programme. Participants will explore how monitoring objectives are defined and refined, how indicators are selected, and how evaluation frameworks are applied to assess monitoring program performance. The course also lays out the institutional and financial dimensions in setting up longer-term monitoring efforts.

Learning Objective

Participants should be able to assess and improve water quality monitoring programmes using monitoring and evaluation principles, understand the requirements for sustaining long-term monitoring, and recognise the institutional and financial considerations needed to support effective and adaptive water quality management over time.

I work at the intersection of science and policy to address environmental issues and the triple planetary crises. I’m adept at working in multilateral and cross-cultural environments, particularly in the Global South, where environmental justice and governance are tightly interlinked. With a background in environmental chemistry, engineering, and public affairs, I bring a unique blend of technical expertise and policy insights. My experience spans across environmental management, environmental policy, hazardous chemicals and waste management, and pollution.
